Spring fever in your stomach is great, but you'd rather not have them in your nose or throat. It is therefore good to know that certain flower types spread a lot of pollen, which can affect people with hay fever or sensitive airways. Do you suffer from hay fever or do you want to give a bouquet as a gift to someone who suffers from this? Then read on and discover why some flowers cause hay fever and which flowers you should choose!
Hay fever, windflowers and insect flowers
A little bit of theory: the complaints associated with hay fever are caused by floating pollen. That is why people with hay fever have a particularly hard time in spring and summer, when most natural flowers bloom and spread their pollen.
Now, in terms of pollen dispersal, there are two types of flowers: windflowers and insect flowers. Windflowers are mainly dependent on the wind for the distribution of pollen. The wind blows the pollen from the flower and spreads it through the air. Insect flowers, on the other hand, spread their pollen via bees, bumblebees and other insects. With the latter type you have much less pollen in the air, and this is the type you should have if you suffer from hay fever.
Flower types that you should avoid if you have hay fever
So if you want to have a bouquet delivered to someone who suffers from hay fever, it is better to avoid typical windflowers. Although there is of course no wind indoors, these flower types will still spread quite a bit of pollen, which can really bother you if you are hypersensitive to pollen. It is better not to have the following flower types in your home if you suffer from hay fever:
- daisies
- chrysanthemums
- sunflowers
- chamomile
- goldenrod
Do choose these flowers for hay fever
Instead of those flower types, we would always opt for typical insect flowers. These flower types spread much less pollen and are therefore ideal for people with hay fever complaints:
- roses
- baby's breath
- lisianthus
- iris
- gerbera
- clematis
- yarrow
- snapdragon
- carnation
- lilies
- tulips
- Zeeland button
Tip: cut pollen from the flowers
Keep in mind that every flower naturally always spreads some pollen, including insect flowers. Are you now sitting at home with a beautiful bouquet of fresh cut flowers and do you notice that you are suffering more from your hay fever? Then of course it would be a shame to throw away the bouquet. Fortunately, we have a good tip for you: cut the pollen threads from the flowers. This can be done with a small pair of scissors and if you do it neatly, your flowers will remain just as beautiful and will remain perfectly beautiful in your vase for just as long.
