Choose the perfect vase for your bouquet with these seven vase tips!

A beautiful bouquet of fresh cut flowers deserves a beautiful vase . You probably already thought that you shouldn't put a single red rose in a large round vase and that you shouldn't put a field bouquet in a tulip vase. But how big should a vase be? And which shape suits which type of bouquets? You'll discover that and more today: here are seven tips for choosing the perfect vase!

Tip 1. Consider the bouquet and vase as one whole

A bouquet without a vase is like a bicycle without wheels: it won't work. At the same time, a vase without flowers is also a bit boring. Flowers and vases therefore belong together and that is why we recommend seeing them as one whole. So look for a vase that matches your bouquet, or - if you already have an eye-catching vase - for a bouquet that matches your vase.

For example, are you looking for a vase for an exuberant and colorful bouquet? Then a neutral white or glass vase is perfect, because it makes the bouquet look even more exuberant. Do you have a distinctive vase that is the showpiece of your interior? Then a bouquet with pastel-colored or white flowers is very beautiful, because they make the vase shine even more.

Tip 2. The perfect vase is not too big, but not too small either

In particular, the size of the vase must match the size of the flower arrangement you want to place in it. A vase that is too small simply does not provide enough space and will cause the stems to pinch. A vase that is too small also looks (and is) not stable. You should not want a vase that is too large, because then you will not be able to see the flowers properly.

What is the perfect size for your vase? Flower arrangers maintain that the height of the vase should be between one third and two thirds of the height of the bouquet. So do you have a bouquet that is sixty centimeters high? Then take a vase of twenty to forty centimeters.

And do you want to determine the ideal vase height with mathematical precision? Then take a look at the Fibonacci series and try to create a ratio according to the golden ratio . To do this, divide the height of the bouquet by the number phi (1.618). With a bouquet of sixty centimeters you end up with a vase height of 37.08 centimeters. According to the rules of aesthetics, this way you get the most beautiful result.

Tip 3. Pay attention to the shape of the vase

In addition to the height, the shape of your vase also plays a major role in the appearance of your flower arrangement on the table. In addition, the correct diameter is important to ensure that the stems do not become trapped or do not receive enough support. A few tips:

  • Most bouquets look best in a vase with an hourglass shape (wide opening, narrowing and wide bottom), such as a chalice vase or a drop vase.
  • Use narrow vases (for example in the shape of a bottle) for loose flowers or small bouquets with two or three stems.
  • A cylindrical vase is usually very nice for tulips or tied bouquets.
  • Are you looking for a vase for a full and round bouquet ? Then consider a spherical vase, such as a jug vase or a ball vase.

Tip 4. Choose a vase from the right material

To enjoy your vase – and your bouquets – for as long as possible, we recommend using glass and (glazed) ceramic vases. Not only because this gives a luxurious look, but especially because these vases are not sensitive to water and scratches and are therefore easy to keep clean. This way the water in the vase stays clean for longer and fresh cut flowers love that!

We therefore advise against plastic vases, because they are prone to scratches, which can trap dirt and bacteria. The same applies to crystal and unglazed ceramics such as terracotta: over time, scratches and cracks develop, in which micro-organisms settle. Disastrous for your vase life! Metal is also not ideal, because it will react with the acidic vase water, which causes toxic metal ions in your vase.

Bonus tip: do you still want to use a metal or crystal vase? Do this in combination with an insert vase!

Tip 5. The most beautiful vases match your interior

Furthermore, make sure that your vase matches your interior in terms of design and finish. Because such a neon green vase may stand out, but in a modern industrial interior it is really not a sight. Transparent glass vases and ceramic vases in black, white and gray are always suitable, also because they form a nice contrast with the green leaves of your bouquet. This makes your flowers stand out even more. Are you looking for a vase that will add refinement and class to your interior? Then consider a luxurious bronze-colored vase or a smoked glass vase.

Tip 6. Place tulips in a tulip vase

Are you specifically looking for a vase for a bouquet of tulips? Then take good care of the delicate stems of these flowers and choose a special tulip vase . These vases have multiple openings, so you can place separate stems in each opening. This not only gives a unique effect, but also ensures that your tulips remain beautiful for longer.
